The Army Logistics Base (ALB) is initiated by Singapore Armed Forces to develop an ideal supply chain that would achieve total value maximisation.
It actually reflects how the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has taken advantage on Singapore’s national economic strengths to strengthen our national defence capabilities. It shows that in order to improve on its military logistics, the SAF has to exploit the full potential of its commercial logistics.
The architecture aspect and infrastructure of the building is amazing keeping in mind the scarcity of land Singapore is facing. It also features innovative energy conservation elements such as the translucent roof that somehow creates natural lighting.
The essential learning points noted in my research from the above-mentioned sources are that through an effective warehouse handling system of material handling which comprises of various systems such as Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) and Mobile Racking & Shelving system, labour productivity increases and of course the effeiciency of logistics operations increases with the use of special technology.
An example of the technologies operating in the ALB is the ‘Automatic Stretch Wrap Machine’. By utilising this machine to its full capacity, it increases the efficiency of wrapping of palletised goods before storing or to be issued. This can reduce the possibility of human error and increase the speed in issuing or storing goods.
Lastly, to conclude, the ALB is definitely a right direction that the SAF has ventured in so as to continuously increase the efficiency of the logistics capabilities.
